Objectifs du cours

At the end of the course, the students should be able to:
1. Understand the nature and constraints of software projects
2. Identify and categorize user requirements
3. Plan and estimate software projects using standard processes and software estimation tools
4. Measure and control project activities

Contenu du cours

Software projects are known to be more complex, less resilient, and more uncertain than other types of projects such as construction, manufacturing, and pharmaceutical projects. According to the 2009 CHAOS report compiled by Standish Group, 24% of software projects fail (cancelled or never used) while 44% are challenged (late, over-budget, and/or delivering less than promised functionality). Those results are significantly worse than the results in non-IT projects. Also, those results are particularly alarming considering that – according to Gartner’s 2010 figures – Western European countries spend €570 billion on IT, and North American organizations allocate 4% of their revenues for IT initiatives, of which 22% is invested in software products. The primary objective of this course is to help learners acquire the necessary knowledge and skills in order to successfully manage software development projects. The course focuses on project management methods, tools, and techniques – especially estimation and control – that are specific to software development projects. The course also allows students to use a simulation game and to experience first-hand the use of a software estimation tool (CoStar 7.0).
