Pré requis
No mandatory prerequisites in terms of theoretical or practical knowledge. Students should be motivated to prepare well for each stage of the course and engage in active participation during the sessions and mediation simulations.
Objectifs du cours
At the end of the course, the student should be to :
- Define mediation and understand when and how to use it to resolve conflicts
- Define an effective and productive mediation process with different phases in interpersonal and commercial disputes
- Realise a good diagnosis of the conflict at hand as an important step in the mediation process
- Reflect on one's individual behaviors in various conflict settings
- Design a plan for conducting a mediation
- Develop the skills needed for a good mediator: perspective-taking, generating options, joint problem solving, reaching understanding and agreement, achieving closure,…
Contenu du cours
The course is highly interactive with many exercises and simulations. The content is learned in a combination of class lectures, practical assigments, simulations, and class discussions.
The following topics will be covered:
- Understanding disputes, conflict resolution, and the role of mediation
- The mediation process: Mediator roles, functions, approaches and procedures
- Conflict analysis: understand the causes of conflict, identify future opportunities, own behavior in various conflict situations
- Designing a plan for mediation
- Conducting productive mediation meetings for the resolution of interpersonal and commercial disputes
The above contents are acquired by students by means of preparation for the course (readings, video material), active in-class participation in mediation simulation exercises (as a neutral and mediator), group discussions and individual reflection

Évaluation
The course is based on experiential learning and is evaluated accordingly. Grades are obtained based on:
- Students' preparation, presence and participation in class (30% preparation for the mediation cases and simulations, presentation, active reflection; 20% presence)
- Students' individual project: preparatory homework and readings; individual final report handed in after class - synthesizing and linking together the theoretical framework and acquired skills during the training (60%)
