No prerequisites per se, but some knowledge about international issues is a plus.

Objectifs du cours

This course aims to help students understand how ethics come into play in the field of international relations and to help them develop a critical understanding of how such issues can drive or influence the behavior of actors. Together with this, this course aims at understanding how international law and ethics enter in a complex relation when it comes to topics such as genocide, compensations, or boycotts. One key issue is to develop an understanding of the various dimensions of ethics in the international fields, from the state to the individual level.

Contenu du cours

The course is organized in lectures, each covering a different topic, gradually moving from war to peace, and from state issues to private ones. Over the course of the lectures students will deal with topics such as just war, post-war justice, sanctions, reparations for crimes against humanity, fair trade, and ethical global movements.

Modalités d'enseignement

Organisation du cours

Each lecture is introduced by one or two presentations prepared by students as groups, and relevant to the topic, chosen in a list presented during the first lecture. Afterwards, these presentations lead to a more general discussion of the lecture’s topic. Additionally, students are asked to prepare a critical reading of a book relevant to the course, chosen from a list of references provided at the beginning of the course. Students are also welcome to choose another book, provided the choice has been approved by the teacher.

In addition to the bibliography, a number of relevant articles and resources will be provided through icampus. As much as the second part of each course can take the form of a formal lecture, discussion and common reflection will be valorized.
