Prerequisites

- Good knowledge of Microsoft Excel
- Good knowledge of finance (financial markets and corporate finance)
- Good knowledge of financial data services and how to access information from Excel
- No prior programming knowledge is expected

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student should be able to :
- Read, understand and explain the VBA programming language
- Program basic applications using Excel VBA
- Draw a diagram of a program structure

Course description

This course first introduces students to computer programming using the VBA language and introduces standard concepts in programming (variables, conditions, loops, etc.). The course then covers several financial programming applications in corporate finance and financial markets. All lectures take place in the Financial Markets Lab where students can interactively apply the course material and develop financial applications interacting with a financial data service.

Assessment

The course is assessed based on a programming project in which students bring an original solution to a financial application of their choice using VBA programming.
