Prerequisites
Students must have basic abilities to use personal computers and the web. Students should have a basic understanding of business concepts. A basic understanding of data/databases is helpful but not required.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
LO1: Recall and explain basic geospatial terminology and concepts
LO2: Create effective visualizations of geospatial data using Geographic Information Systems software
LO3: Conduct basic analyses involving geospatial data using Geographic Information Systems software
LO4: Develop a basic web or mobile application that uses geospatial data
Course description
This course examines the key geospatial principles related to business analysis and decision-making. Students will learn to identify problems and questions with a spatial (location-based) component such as site selection, market analysis and customer segmentation, risk and crisis management, and logistics (e.g., routing). Furthermore, students will develop basic skills for using leading geographic information systems software to analyze these problems and create graphical representations to communicate their findings. Furthermore, students will be introduced to the rudiments of developing web- or mobile-based geospatial applications.
