General overview- Presentation
The Environment becomes a science and today necessitates a global, inter-disciplinary approach resting on solid knowledge, scientific, legal, technical, economic, and methodological.
The aim of the course in environmental science (Bachelors and Masters) is to train project managers who are capable of doing a number of tasks and have acute knowledge and operational skills in different areas of the environment in its widest sense. - Learning Objectives
The 1st year of Masters aims at the acquisition of basic environmental knowledge. It is divided into three parts: - 8 months of scientific and technical teaching, practical work and case studies applied to the environment; - a group project alongside a professional in the environment - 4-month internship
The final year of Masters is characterised by a balance between - finalising the acquisition of the different skills needed in science, knowledge of business and more acute environmental questions - a strong grounding in professional life, through: group projects, and final thesis. - Professional opportunities for graduates
What is the Environment? The environment is defined according to the approach one takes : - as a whole number of elements, natural or artificial, surrounding a definite system, whether an individual, a species, an area of ground, a production site - as the whole number of exchanges (removal, dumping) between human activity and the ecosystems in a given area - as the whole number of objective and subjective elements which make up a defined living environment (individual, species…) From this, it is clear that the generic name Environment brings together a multitude of themes (water, air, soils, waste, natural habitats, the countryside, noise, energy, land use, safety) which concerns numerous sectors (industry, agriculture, local councils, public health) and many levels of intervention (study, advice, assessment, checks, development, engineering, project management). What is environmental management? Environmental management tasks consist in identifying the needs and constraints of a given system under study (factory, town council, economic entities) and seeking new solutions for everyday management of their environment, in its widest terms. This means knowing how to - identify the environmental aspects and impact of any activity - analyse the legal demands and any other demands linked to the site under study - help put adapted, whether simple or more complicated, environmental management systems into place and help them survive in order to overcome the impacts or limit their effects, reduce pollutant by-products in the different environmental compartments (water, air, waste, site planning), and to optimise the tools of production and their relationship with the environment. - Conditions for graduation
Masters in Science and Technology - Option in Environment Studies - Specialisation in Assessment and Treatment in the Environment. This diploma is awarded in convention with ULCO (Université du Littoral Côte d'Opale).
Conditions for graduation: validation of 4 semesters.
